A short ferry ride from Phuket lies Koh Phiphi Don, the largest and only populated island in the Koh Phiphi island chain. Koh Phiphi hotels come in various guises, from private beach huts forming part of a hotel resort, to guesthouses in the center of the island, to luxury private villas perched on the jungle covered cliffs.
Most resort style Koh Phiphi hotels have the use of a private beach and swimming pool. Many also offer leisure facilities such as air conditioned gyms or spas for guests to indulge in traditional massage therapies and beauty treatments. Hotel rooms on the resorts are usually arranged as a series of private beach huts or bungalows constructed from wood or bamboo. Each suite generally comes with its own bathroom and shower facilities and has its own private balcony overlooking the sea where you can take in the sunset at the end of the day.
Towards the center of the island, guesthouses offer hotel rooms amongst the bustling streets, perfect for those visitors who prefer to be in the heart of the action. The beach is never further than a short stroll away and the island's bars and nightclubs are close at hand for a taste of Thailand's music scene with its reggae and soul influences.
For the ultimate luxury holiday experience, private villas are dotted around the cliff tops and offer an alternative to the rest of the Koh Phiphi hotels. Rainforest jungles surround the cliffs providing a home to the island's varied wildlife, from the macaque monkeys who enjoy offerings of fruit from their visiting guests, to the brightly colored plumes of tropical birds nesting in trees and along the cliff face.
Describing Thailand's Koh Phiphi Islands without using the words "tropical" and "paradise" in quick succession is almost impossible. The endless stretches of fine white sand, the crystal clear waters, the historic formations of rock that jut from the turquoise bays and the leafy green rainforests covering the hills and cliffs, make these islands amongst the most stunningly beautiful natural landscapes to be found the world over.
Bananas, pineapples, coconuts and cashews grow in abundance amongst the rubber plantations providing the islands' main form of agriculture. The "wet season" or "green season" brings the welcome relief of warm tropical rains between June and September, but the tropical climate ensures sunshine and warm temperatures all year round with an average of between 90 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
One of the best ways to discover Koh Phiphi is to explore the many bays and caves by kayak, or to hop from island to island on a longboat, both of which are popular activities with visitors. The cliffs, rocks and caves provide superb opportunities for rock climbing and daring visitors also frequently partake in the sport of cliff diving. As with most island destinations, fresh seafood is offered in abundance in the island's many restaurants, as are many more culinary delights - from traditional Thai delicacies to European influenced cuisine. Handmade crafts, clothes and jewelry line the bustling markets offering plenty of excuses for a spot of shopping.
Perhaps the biggest attraction for visitors to these islands is the snorkeling and scuba diving. Most of the Koh Phiphi hotels have PADI dive centers available to their guests and local staff have experience of all the best dive spots. Experienced divers will find some of the world's finest diving in sites such as Phi Phi Ley, Hin Muang, Shark Point and Koh Bida. There are also numerous caves and wrecks to be explored. The dive centers also offer PADI certificated dive courses for visitors new to diving and beneath the sparkling azure waters gentle sloping banks lead to coral gardens filled with a startling abundance of marine wildlife.
The islands are surrounded by the Andaman Sea which has an average temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit and a sandy bed carpeted in coral reefs. Divers enter a world of rainbow colored tropical fish such as clown fish, angel fish, parrot fish and puffer fish. Gentle sea turtles, sea horses, lobster and zebra sharks are also very likely to be seen beneath the surface, as well as the odd whale or manta ray for those lucky enough to spot them.
Whatever your idea of a perfect holiday - whether it's action packed or simply a quiet break in paradise, Koh Phiphi will capture your heart and stay with you for the rest of your days.
